FOPA Association Kenya
FOPA Association Kenya is an all-inclusive forum comprising of all former Members of Parliament of Kenya, including Senators, Women Representatives, EALA MPs and Governors. The idea was born after the 8th August, 2017 general elections when a few of the members who did not make it back to Parliament came together for post-election analysis. It was agreed that we needed to come together as former Members of Parliament because there is life after Parliament. Many lives and careers of former MPs have been shattered and rendered helpless by this perceived public opinion that once an MP loses his/ her seat, that is the end of his/her career. Perhaps, this is what fuels the vicious political duels that we experience after every five years in this country. There is need to change this narrative. In any competition there must be losers and winners and the society needs to appreciate that all of them are playing an important role in the growth of democracy in our country. “Asiye kubali kushindwa si mshindani.” Based on the above facts, our Association was born and currently, it has close to 500 registered members.
Our members have many years of cumulated knowledge, skills and talents in various fields of governance, legislation, public administration, oversight and community mobilization which need to be harnessed and developed for the larger benefit and common good of our society. Some members have served as MPs for decades while others have served in senior government positions such as ministers, assistant ministers, heads of government departments and parastatals, ambassadors, and many other senior government and private sector positions. There is need to tap into this rich pool of skills among our members to improve service delivery to the Kenyan people.
FOPA Association Kenya is alumni of Parliament and at all times we want to strengthen the workings and delivery of this institution. The Association shall endeavor to strengthen linkages with Parliament of Kenya and other similar institutions in the region and beyond for the benefit of the members and the Kenyan people. Our Association shall always play the role of a supportive and beneficial partner to our Parliament as opposed to a competitor, hence the alumni status. Moving forward, it’s our hope that this “alumni status” shall be anchored in law and institutionalized.
The Association uses a non-partisan approach in running and managing its affairs. As members, we agreed to shade off our political, tribal and religious affiliations and work together towards a common goal which unifies our people and promotes nationhood. As an entry point for our members, one must be willing and ready to promote national cohesion, integration and peaceful coexistence among the various communities in this country. We are committed to promoting a National culture where all Kenyans must live together as one people irrespective of their diversity, for that is the only way we can achieve meaningful development and enjoy growth of democracy.
